Default 454: what pistons and cam?

Building a mild, hopefully reliable 454 for an old Cig 20. Previous motor that blew had SP hyper domed pistons (H426CP) and crane 134561 cam. I'm thinking of going with forged SP pistons. I have 049 heads with stock valve sizes--no plans for head modifications at this time. Do I get domed or flat top? Also, I'm thinking of getting either a Comp cam 11-242-3 (XE268H), or 11-236-4 (XM270H). Thanks for any help/ideas, and yes, I know that I should have done this 2 months ago.

You are building a mild 454, using your stock heads/ valve size.
I would use hyperpiston and make close to 9:1 CR. They are strong enough for what you are doing. I think your cam choice is too large. You need bigger valve, high rise intake, and better exhaust to take advantage of the power range of the cam. If you want to go with comp cam i would use 11-234-3 XE256 H 10 or 11-238-3 XE 262 H 10.
Good luck

I don't know what the 049 head you have flows like or valve sizes but a common combo is [email protected] intake 240 @.050 exhaust with a 114 lsa and install the cam at 112 intake centerline a L2399f forged piston and a Dart intake there has been some difference of opinion on the Dart intake it's the only thing I would use and I know it will make 500hp 500ft lbs with a 9022 holley good luck Laz Mesa

dont run a used flat tappet cam ever! spend the couple extra bucks a go with the FORGED PISTONS! look at doug herberts roller cam and lifter and spring set up very reasonably priced, and the head and cam is where you make power.

Thanks for the ideas, so far. More details: I was running an Edlebrock performer 2.0 intake, and also have an Edlebrock troker 2 intake that I could use. I am planning on getting a set of new GLM aluminum exhaust manifolds from Dennis Moore. Cast Mercruiser exhaust is going in the scrap iron pile where it belongs.

I'll say................Ditto.

Even low budget, chances are you'll save $$$ this way. Cheaper then engine removal/rebuilding........again.

Flat tappets are still a roll of the dice, even though getting better as everyone learns more. Agressive lobes on subpar metallurgy doesn't help things.

TRW makes decent forged pistons for a low price. They've been making these same ones for, well, a real long time.

454 Blue Printed and Balanced
Demon Mighty Marine Carb
JE Forged Pistons 9.6:1
Dart Alum. Heads
Dart Hi Riser Intake Manifold and Port Matched
CraneCams Camshaft (I will have to check the specs)
Roller Rocker Lifters
Stock Crank
Stock Rods
CMI Headers
...Many other parts can't remember

PS: I have a used CraneCams a 454, Holley 850cfm carb and a Edelbrock intake manifold. The setup with a stock 454 block and pistons was running at 470hp.
