merc 165 water flows???
hi guys,
i just put my boat in the water last night after a complete rebuild of the outdrive. seemed abit warm at idle (170F), but not too bad, went for a 500' run and overheated (210F) with the rad cap (closed cooling) lifting. cooked the exhaust boot from the elbow to the exhaust tube. i went to check some things this morning and found the cooked rubber. i started the boat with the water inlet unhokked from the heat exchanger and there is hardly 1/4 hose flow from it, with no force behind it. i was wondering what the flow should be at idle (750 RPM)? and pressure?
and before it is asked, the boat was never run without water.
i will be seeing the guy who rebuilt it, but cant until monday. i was hoping to have some homework done before i see him.
thanks
brian

Removing the outlet hose from the drive and putting in a 1 gallon container is the book test start it up at idle it should fill it in about 1 minute the manual does not give a pressure figure. If it fills Ok to the above check for debris in the PS cooler if equipped. Also the hose between the gimble and the shield with age they can kink and do what you describe. But I suspect it may be loosing it in the drive!

Re: merc 165 water flows???
phil,
thanks for that. i just ran it this afternoon with a garden hose on the HX and the hose from the drive over the side of the boat. no flow at idle, about full pipe @ 2500 but no pressure behind it. when i plug off the end of the hose, the flow stops. there is no coolers other than the exchanger and that is new. i will talk to him tomorrow and see what he wants to do. i was actually thinking that the hose from the gimble in may be the culprit since there seems to be alot of aggitation comming from the outdrive at idle. maybe it even failed and that is why the flow only starts when the RPM is up.
thanks again
