Default Silicone on exhaust tips?

Does everyone silicone your tips in? It's almost impossible to get my tailpipes off without removing the tips or the headers. To prevent transom rot I was thinking of making a rubber gasket for the tip to the transom instead. Opinions?

My tips are well above the water line but get wet when I come off plane quickly or in heavy seas.
