From 454 to 540...
IŽd like to hear opinions on heads, intake and cam choice for a 540 build-up. Short block is done in Merlin std height block with Eagle rotating kit apprx. 9.5:1 cr with 119cc heads. Afr`s, E-brocks or Merlin`s? Cam -731, -741 or ? It`s going in 24` Mach 1 that currently runs 67mph w/500hp 454.

Lots has been written on this subject and there are lots of opinions. I would contact rmbuilder. (a member here) He is extremely knowledgeable and can put a program together for you tailored to fit any specific situation. But in any case; Remember that you want advice from MARINE engine builders, NOT the street and track guys! --- Jer

I was thinking of going 454 to dart 540 block build up but then i found out that it would require alot of new rigging and new parts including better motor mounts, better fuel lines and that such parts to support the more hp.

Don't waste your time on the merlins or edelbrock marine heads, they barely flow over 300intake/200 exhaust which is real close to stock rectangle ports. The AFR heads in a 305 or preferably a 315 cnc have OUTSTANDING flow numbers (approx 380 in/310 exh at .600 lift). I would contact rmbuilder(AKA bob madera) at585-654-8583 as he is a distributer for afr heads and can probably give you the best deal on them anyways. He also does custom cam design and will sell you a custom ground hyd roller that will work as promised the first shot for just about same cost as you'd pay for a off the shelf grind at most places. He has spec'd out cam and head combos for numerous board members that are giving excellent results in the boat, not just on the dyno. A 540 is a nice size, big enough to make great tq,small enough to install with out using a tall deck block and running into exhaust hole issues,Smitty
