clank, clank, clank...dead in the water!

clank, clank, clank...dead in the water!
My boat's been running well, until today! (1996 7.4Gsi)
Taking a pretty good pounding running in 3-4 footers, I hear some faint clanking, then worsening, then my engine powers down and dies (all this within about 10 - 15 seconds). It comes close to restarting but does not catch. Drive seems fine...any speculation on the problem?

No smoke at all, just a loud "knocking". I'm kind of changing my description of the noise. "Clanging" sounds really harsh, maybe it was more of a severe "knocking". Kind of like when you used to shut down an old car and it continued to run (poorly) for a few seconds. Like that only louder.
On the lake it wanted to start again, in my garage it sounds fine when rolling over. A buddy says the distributer is phased correctly, and we are getting ample spark. But he is puzzled as to why it won't fire now.
Is there a knock sensor? Could the engine need some kind of a reset to its computer protection system? Does this engine have 2-bolt mains with cast crank and oval heads, or 4 bolt mains with steel crank and rectangular heads?

I'm not a real mecanic, but I would start with compression test, and a leak down test. If everything is ok, then it's hapening in the bottom, if one or more cylinder looses pressure, then maybe it could be a valve related problem...

Holy ****, what a relief...turned out to be water in the tank! The noise was backfiring, not knocking or clanking. My new fuel vent fitting was installed with the holes facing up and forward (I wonder what dumbass did that?), and in the rough conditions I was filling my tank Lake Michigan!

Pretty good for $100 hr. 
Get all that fuel out now and go burn a few tanks ASAP before that water causes big time fuel system issues if it hasn't already.
