Default First time changing 502 impeller

I'm trying to learn to do some maintenance on my boat to offsett the gas prices a bit. I need to change the impeller on my 502. I got the exploded diagram from the BAM site which helps a little, but are there some tips any of you can share with me to help me with the process? Is this something a non-mechanic can do or should I eat it and hire somebody to do it? Thanks

Its a simple thing to do. Make sure you dont cross the hoses when you put everything back together. When taking the pump apart, take note of the direction the impeller was spinning. It will be twisted to one direction. When re-assembling, make sure you turn it that direction when squeezing it back into the cup. Also, put a coat of 2-4-C or Merc 101 grease in the cup before assembling.

Do you guys remove the pump and change it on a bench or do you access it from where it's mounted?

Take the pump off and do the work on a bench.Use lots of lube on impeller and I also use a large zip tie around the impeller to start twisting the vains in the right direction as you tighten it.Then as you slip the impeller into the housing let the zip tie slide off, works for me.

Don't forget to backflush the system if there are any impellor pieces missing. This will cause overheating problems down the road.
