Default No start condition

I have a 92 baja 240 w/ a stock 454 . The problem is it will not start. It will not even turn over and the battery is fine. I did notice the last couple of times I went out , there was a slight hesitation when I turned the ignition key before it turned over.

Am I looking at a starter or should I just call the mechanic ?

Thanks for any help,

WayneO

I would probably say it is the starter. Easy fix. When you turn the ignition to start do you hear any clicking sound from the engine? Any easy way to test is a few taps of a hammer on the starter then crank it sometimes it locks up and this will free up the solenoid. If it does then you know it is the starter.

If you can get to the back of your key switch very easy, I would check therer first. Make sure it's working properly. If it is, then pull the starter and get it checked out.
That delayed reaction thing makes me thing ket switch.
How are you sure the bateries are ok? It may be a conection with to much resistance(dirty).

could be starter, could be bad connexion, could be also many other minor thing. BUT ! I could also be water in cylinder. That happened to me. So even if battery was just charged to perfection, it's hard, or even sometimes impossible to compress water in the cylinder. After all minor problem, you could always (cost nothing) take all your spark plug off, and see if there is water coming off cylinder, or just some light rust on the plug.If so... gasket, cracked head or block...so on and so on...

If you tapped on the starter and it worked it most likely is the starter. However there is a starter slave solenoid that will act the same way. The starter will be expensive to put on. I would hate to have that done just to find out it was the slave solenoid. It might be possible that the time you hit the starter it was going to work anyway. Get a test light and verify there is voltage to the starter when the key is in the start position.
