I have heard from several different people that the 502 mag burns a little oil. I ran mine about 45 hours this season, maybe 5 at wot. That is being generous. I put about a gallon of oil in this motor over these hours and was wondering if that sounded right to anyone. Any information would be appreciated. This seems to be a little much.
BTW the boat has ran excellent all year. Never a problem..
Thanks

I have the same issue with my 502 mag. Every couple of weekends I would add a qt of oil. A freind suggested using mobil 1 syntheitc, so yesterday I changed the oil to mobil 1. I noticed a 5 lbs increase in oil presure after warm-up.
I won't know for a few more weeks if it will help with consumption, but the higherr oil presure leads me to think it will.

These motors come with low tension oil rings. It's the nature of the beast - oil consumption that is.
Alway check your oil level and add if needed.
BTW: this is not an issue. The only 'issue' is if you let it go low enough to cause issues.

IN it's first season and about 45 hours, my 540 used about 1 qt every 5-10 hours also. This season I'm running Amsoil 20w-50 (SRO) and it's not really using any.
And like Insptech, my OP is better. I was running Valvoline 50wt racing and OP would be really high at first but drop as it got warm, then take a long time to recover. Not real stable, especialy when running hard either. With the Amsoil it's much more stable. It's not as high at first but stays consistant and even after a hard run, it will only drop 10 psi or so and doesn't take long to recover.
