Default yet another cam/head question..

i'm not new to building big HP BBC's, but i am new to performance boating.

i have a 96 24' Baja Outlaw, the motor that's going together for it is a bored 454, stock stroke 4340 crank, eagle H-beam rods, Ross pistons. the heads i have are WAY too big for this type of set up, so i'm sell a set and was going to order this for the top end... the marine Edelbrock Performer RPM oval port heads, Performer RPM intake, and i have a prepped holley dp carb to top it off.
i was looking at this comp cam for it..

Cam Style: Hydraulic flat tappet
Basic Operating RPM Range: 2,000-6,200 RPM
Intake Duration at 050 inch Lift: 234
Exhaust Duration at 050 inch Lift: 244
Duration at 050 inch Lift: 234 int./244 exh.
Advertised Intake Duration: 278
Advertised Exhaust Duration: 292
Advertised Duration: 278 int./292 exh.
Intake Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio: 0.564 in.
Exhaust Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio: 0.567 in.
Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio: 0.564 int./0.567 exh. lift
Lobe Separation (degrees): 112
Intake Valve Lash: 0.000 in.
Exhaust Valve Lash: 0.000 in.
Computer Controlled Compatible: No
Grind Number: CB XM 278H-12

i'm i going to have any reversion problems?
what do you guys think about this combo?
has anybody run these heads on a 454 style motor? my engine builder had these heads on a pump gas 402 and on the dyno and it made 541 hp, but that's a whole different bore and stroke.
should i try the performer rpm square ports instead? would they gain enough more power to make up the loss in torque to be worth it?

thanks john

The cam is too big for the rest of the build. You should go with about 226/236 for duration. Any more than that, you'll be floating your valves before it makes peak hp. Also it will revert unless you have dry pipes. A set of Lightning headers with the 3" rise would be great on that size engine. The heads and intake are great. Bet it will make over 500 hp set up like that.

Too late to exchange rotating asembly for 496cid ? Money should be very much the same.

What heads do you have BTW ?

yea i'd rather had done a 496 but this is all stuff i had just laying around.
my heads that are to big are Canfeild castings ported by CFE, their a raised port deal they flow 428 cfm @ 0.700 lift. their cool but to use them in a boat would require a 10-71 and although i can get my hands on one, i can't offord the drive it would take. these heads and short block were set up with a 95mm turbo to make about 1600, but since buying a boat the street car getting a smaller motor and turbo.

That sounds pretty good, but like others have said you would need good aftermarket exhaust. Go with a roller cam with more lift and less duration if you can afford it. If I had it to do over I would have spent the extra $ an a good roller cam. I am still debating on switching mine out.

yea i want a set of Lighting headers if i have any money left over, i think a hydro, roller cam converstion is going to be out of the budget though.

I would agree that the cam is too big with too much duration for a mild 454ci engine.

I used a Crane 134241(134242 is a cam kit) with good results in a warmed over 454mag.

BMF's I'm assuming ? Are you selling them ? If so, what size and how much ?

Sorry for the quick sidetrack.

Sorry for the quick sidetrack.

2400.00, complete heads, stud girdle, and push rods for a std. deck block.
the heads have .800 lift springs on them and they have a reciver grove in them for an O ring, but they have never been decked. their in exellent condition, they have 23 passes on them and about 50 street miles.
