Is their a difference between buying a altenator from mercruiser or will an automotive one be the same thing?

I replaced two of mine from a auto electric store in NJ. He had the exact same replacement as the mercruiser unit. The cost was 160.00. Had no problems. I also replaced the starters also from him. They are about 1/2 the price as mercruisers.

The marine parts should be spark arrested or sealed to keep sparks from ingiting any fuel vapors in the closed engine compartment. I guess if you don't care about that you could use the automotive parts I dont suppose the CG or DNR would like it too much either if you ever got stopped for an inspection. Is the difference in price worth it ??

If you go to a decent Alternator rebuild shop they can build you one with the proper screens. I found a place that built one for me for $60. It is a One Wire GM alternator with the screens installed to make it CG approved.
Check around and ask questions.. I would think you can find a direct replacement or just have yours rebuilt..
