Aronow Cat - Need advice Please
I'm sure a number of you have seen the 1984 Aronow Cat that has been for sale for 3-4 years with 800SC & #3's. Could any of you pros shed some light on why you think it has not sold and what kind of concerns YOU would have with buying this boat?
If Marc McManis re-rigged and went over this boat - I would think it is OK? Thank you! Mark |
Unless it's an unusual one, the bare fiberglass hull alone weighs about 12,000 lbs. They were built for US customs. Even with that hp, it wont hit 80 mph. The tunnel's too small, the hull is to heavy. Do a seach in the general discussion session. I think the best quote was something like, "Aronow cut a 39 V in two and made a cat that brought out the worst aspects of both designs."
See this thread and do a search in the general dscussions forum. http://www.offshoreonly.com/forums/s...ghlight=aronow |
thats what I came to the conclussion of, no matter how much power you put in it it won't go fast.. I heard so much negative I assed. I was offered one that needed engines drives and rerig for free. passed on the deal.

Thank you very much for the link rdoactive - very helpful!
I know the boat is built like a tank, but I don't have 400 large for a Nortec. I would love to have it with the desiels! For my first boat of this type, 70 mph would be fine - but how much gas???!!! Anybody have input on reliability and maint. for these engines. I like stock power for reliability. Rebuilding power every 100 hours is insane if not racing. I just want to have fun in the sun and do Poker runs. Thanks for any feedback! Mark |

At cruise speed, you will burn about 50 gallons an hour EACH. |
i think that it's a great boat imo...your right , it wo'nt be fast , but that is 1 heck of a party machine.. diesels would be nice too...
|
Also, not really trailerable as they are about 12-13 feet wide.
|
great boat if ya run in the open ocean 99% of the time...
|
Ya know, there's a reason it's been for sale 3-4 years. I've ridden on one of these with 500hp's and TRS. People buy cats to go fast. People buy deep Vs to run in big water. This doesn't do either well.
It does have a huge cockpit that fits 12 people! I dont know how much they're asking for it (is there a link?). But for the same money I would be willing to bet you could find a chris cat with about 500hp/side that would run rings around the Aronow. And have enogh left over to buy a deck boat to put 12 friends on. Gary |
Thanks for the imput guys! Man those engines eat gas - not a suprise, but wow!
Any other suggestions? Mark |
