Merc Bravo Drive Oil

What Type Of Outdrive Oil Is The Best ?? Motors Are Now Out Of Warranty...i Have Been Using Merc High Performance Stern Drive Oil...what Does Everyone Use??

Boy you can open a can of worms with gear ans engine oils! Redline, AMSOIL are the top two, I recently discovered another that reads as good if not better it is Spectro. I think Spectro is well worth adding to the list, their engine oil beats the well touted Harley oil take it from there. My drive and engine will be running both this season!

Don't forget Royal Purple....The can is open, might better do a search for drive oil on this topic or it will get ugly REAL fast!!

Well, have you had any problems using the Merc oil?
You're going to get alot of personnal opinions, because if 1 was proven the best without a doubt, everyone would be using it and there would be no post asking which is best. :)

Anybody here of Silogram??

Go to bottom of page and click on DynaRace II . There is no weight rating. They won't give you one either.

I would agree about the Merc HP. I've run the same Bravo 1 outdrive hard for 15 years on the stuff. Wake hopping, water skiing and racing. On my second factory engine but never had to touch the outdrive so far. I am sure this is common.

Ive run A pair of TRS drives hard for 12 years on Merc H.p.
changed @ 50 hrs.. After disassembly inspection a few years back I just resealed them the insides looked mint. Every thing should work this good!

I like to use the Mercury gear lube in the drives. I have tries Royal Purpleand have had gsome issues. Was it the oil? Who knows, went back to green and problems went away. Yet we run the Royal Purple racing 51 in some of the big motors we service and after its time to freshen up the engine builder said the inside looked great after 150 hours. 1150 Cobras. I use Mobil 1 and Valvoline Racing. Its all in what YOU think is a good oil. After all, Mercury oil lasted the warrenty period.

I've used Amsoil in the past with good results. Never had a problem with the Merc HP.

I run the Merc stuff too. 600+ hours, lots of flight time, no problems.

I had someone recommend using the same oil that is used in the # 6 drives to run it in a bravo drive when pushing over 600 hp. Thoughts?

Scott 03-19-2007 10:21 PM

One thing about the Merc green it does mix with water. This is a must in my opinion:cool:

Hydrocruiser 03-20-2007 06:53 PM

Good seals matter most.

Did you test your seals with a pressure/vacuum tester before adding in the new lube?

You should ya know. :evilb:

Scott 03-21-2007 08:09 AM

Hydro I may be reading into your post too much and your right but failure can happen at anytime. This is why I like a lube that will mix, it may save the day if you have a small leak before the next oil change.

I run the mercury green in my #6's and have run it in all of my previous Bravo's without any issues.

Pismo10 03-25-2007 07:49 PM

What is the Merc Green? Is that Merc HP drive lube?

US1 Fountain 03-25-2007 07:50 PM
