T-stat housing issues

I should've known not to mess with something that wasn't completely broken. But I wanted to throw some new t-stats in before the weekend.
This is out of my port 1991 454MAG with 1133hrs; I think the t-stat is original
What's causing all the black stuff? And what the heck is growing in there?
Another thing I noticed is the sending units are reversed from how the starboard motor is. I've got to check the drawing and see which way is OEM.
Anybody see any problems with me eventually converting to one of these?

WOW! Salt water maybe? I still have two factory '89 454 Mag T-stat housings (fresh water only). Slightly different, but should work for you if you want them for a few bucks and shipping.

Yup, salt water. Pry the sleeve out, knock the stat out scrape the gaskets off, scrape the growing fecal matter out and get on with it. I and many other salt water mechanics have seen worse that that. Just make sure you use the lower gasket with the ground studs in it and use the top gasket cut out like the one you have, do not use the solid one or the one with a by pass hole in it. Also it really doesnt matter which side the sending units are in, but I to like things the same.

Oh yah, remove the balls in the by pass "T" and give the springs a little stretch. Then turn the balls over and use the opposite side. Tighten the nut up just until it gets snug.

What about eventually switching to the housing I linked to? I know I've got to re-jigger the hoses, but I'll probably time it to coincide with an exhaust upgrade anyways.

Um, while you have them off, take a screwdriver and give a real good poke to the area directly below the t-stats in the manifold. I have seen these rot right through and dump water in the oil-better to find out now than about 20 miles from the ramp....

At least I get to run mine year round
I'm curious, they're obviously a replacement for the newer MPIs, but I'm guessing the biggest difference is that you just run one hose to the bottom of the manifold. If you have dry-joint setup you run the jumper hose, if it's wet-joint it just goes up the manifold to the riser.
What would I be missing there? Oh, and I've already got one that I got for $75, so I'd be buying the second one from you guys.
At least I get to run mine year round
