I had a major impeller destruction that caused an overheat of my motor. I replaced the impeller and started pulling off hoses to find missing chunks. I couldn't get the oil cooler hoses off easily, so skipped past them to the thermostat housing supply line. Here I found no water had been present, so no chunks had made it this far. With the supply line off, I started the motor to ensure proper water flow. I got great water flow immediately and it puked out a load of impeller chunks from the destroyed one.
My question is, how likely is there still chunks of impeller in the system, particularly from the pump to oil cooler. Since I did not think of doing a back flush, and the amount of large chunks that came out, is it likely that I got them all?

We had the same thing happen ... I would back flush the oil cooler to be on the safe side. After removing the engine several years later ...due to main bearing failure ... found impeller debris in the cooler.

There are almost certainly chunks still in there. Backflushing does not always get them out either. You should get your fingers in there to make sure you remove all the pieces. There are worse places the bits can lodge farter downstream of the cooler.

Flush from the Thermostat side towards the oil cooler ...If its a 502 MPI pull the hose off the PS cooler on the back (top) of the motor .... Raid you wifes Nylon drawer and put it on the end at the PS cooler .... put a water hose into the hose at the Thermostat end and run some water thru ..Then Turn the water off and remove the end from the hose bib ...Crimp the hose to keep it full of water ....insert an air gun and blast the water towards the Nylon .... Check for debris' ....m
