Questions about my Cam..???? Need help!
I just recently had my motor rebuilt and I want to make sure that the camshaft that my engine builder picked out is going to work without a possibility of reversion. I have told a few people about the cam that I have in my motor and pretty much I have gotten mixed reviews regarding the cam in regards to reversion.
Here are my cam specs: INTAKE EXHAUST Valve Adjustment HYD HYD Gross Valve Lift .613 .613 Duration @ .006 Tappet Lift 307 307 Valve Timing Open Close @ .050 INT: 16 BTDC 48 ABDC EXH: 56 BBDC 8 ATDC These specs are for cam installed @ 106.0 Intake Center Line INTAKE EXHAUST Duration @ .050 245 245 Lobe Lift .3610 .3610 Lobe Separation 110.0 Comp Cams Part# 11-000-9 Carl Mcquillen Racing Engines Grind#: CB 3150B / 3150B HR110.0 Please let me know if it is good or bad...? I just installed the motor in the boat but we have not started it up yet so its not too late. Thanks Anthony |
I'm not a cam expert but the cam you have is a automotive grind, not at all a marine cam and is wrong for what you are doing (If I remember correctly you have a typical 502 with wet exhaust) . Your leaving alot on the table,I told you 4 months ago your engine builder sounded like a car engine builder, not marine engine builder when he told you to discard your rectangle port heads and find some oval port heads but thats already been debated so I won't bring it up again. Call rm builder-585-654-8583,he is even local to you in the rochester area and is a marine cam expert. I'm not picking on you but your engine builder is steering you wrong,Bob-AKA-RMbuilder will pick you out a appropiate cam to salvage your motor build to where you don't end up with a turd,Smitty

And,yes, not only will your motor not run as good as it should,it will probably revert water too,Smitty

I would be worried about reversion with that cam and a stock style exhaust. Dry tailpipes cost a lot more than a new cam.

Call Bob Madara "RMbuiler" of Marine Kinetics. Many people here on OSO have consulted Bob for marine cam application help. He will get you the proper cam for your exhaust and set-up, etc.

I had Carl McQuillen redo my AFR heads and they did awesome work. However, they are a car shop and don't get much marine cam work experience. Go with someone who has marine cam experience.

That's a pretty big cam. Looks like it will have reversion. There is to much overlap.
Need to have 8 degrees separation minimum as a rule, I have always heard. |
I talked it over with RMBUILDER and he is gonna work me out something a lot better. I am sure glad that this was noticed before I finished installing the new motor.
