Anyone know why a depth finder will work correctly sometimes and then just start blinking and quite reading all at once? Seems to act up when I need it the most. It is a Lowrance.

well, most likely one of two things..but both are related.....it is your transducer...it is either going on the fritz..or it is coming loose and every time you get some water in your bilge it is making contact and reading the depth......what happens is sometimes those transducers get a crack in the epoxy that holds them in..when that happens they have an air gap and a transducer will not read through air, but when you get a little water built up in your bilge it fills the crack and it will go ahead and read depth...or it is just a bad transducer and you need to replace it...... it will be located in your bilge under or near your engine oil pan.......one wire about 5mm will be going to it.

Thanks... I know one thing for sure it looks to be a pain in the a** to get to the transducer. Is it difficult to put in a new one once you get to it ?

no..just bust it out and epoxy the new one in......apply the epoxy liberally to the deck, then push the puck down inside the epoxy..let it set up and you are ready!

So can I just change the transducer and not have to do the gauge and all ?

That is correct..of course there is the slight possibility that your gauge is the problem, but doubtful

Had the exact same problem. The puck had come loose from the hull.

so does all the epoxy left behind have to be cleaned up good before putting in the new puck? If so whats the best method to get it cleaned up?

You can just leave the old puck in place, and epoxy a new one in the same general location.
