Question on Stepped Hulls?

Please shed some light on this! I was reading a thread in another forum and somebody stated that with all things being equal ( lenth, motors, weight, etc.) a stepped hull is no faster than a traditional style and you lose handling especially in turns. If this was true why do boat companies keep making these hulls?

Just out of curiosity, is it the fact that they are faster, cause the steps or that newer boats have a higher X dem. I mean most of the pics you see there isn't very much of the boat in the water and the steps are exposed, same as a flat v.. I dunno just thought I would ask, not trying to start a pisser.
