merc module timing

what advance does the v6-14 have on a v8 application?
Also is it true that you arn't supposed to use an advance dial type light when checking your timing?
One more question- do the modules just die when they fail or do they act whacky or loose the advance range?

8- 10 degress. Mine has nine. I confirmed and reconfirmed this yesterday. It begins the advance at about 650 rpm and is all in by 2200. So if you don't see the advance coming in as it should, check it at a very low idle and you will see it then. Broke in my new blower motor with it today and I have run this set up in the past. Works great with an MSD blaster 3 High vibration coil.

My dial light works fine but I have heard that before

When my last one died, it started to cut out for a split second while I was running at about 3500 RPM, fifteen minutes later, it did it again and again....and again.... After another hour it died completely, I mean COMPLETELY! Plugged in my spare and was underway in less than 3 minutes! I love this system!

Like was said, 8-10* advance all in around 2000rpms.

A dial light should work fine and is about the only way with timing indicator/pointer on the timing cover. Don't need a dial light if you have timing tape on the balancer.

Thanks

If most bbc like around 34* total timming (mine does) and your V6 module advances 8-10* then your left with 24-26* initial. That seems like a lot. Couldn't this cause some denotation while trying to plane out or low rpm loads?

I use a Snap On advance light. It's so easy. Just dial in the timing you want, get the module in the base timing mode with a scan tool or a timing tool and set the pointer at TDC. Tighten the distributor, recheck the timing and you're done.

Don't forget to remove the timing tool or scan back to normal mode.

It should be fine. The HP modules will be advance(34*) by 3000rpms for a reference.

Here are the TBIV advance curves. Don't forget to add your inital timing to these figures to get total your advance.

Thanks for the curves! I wish it had the V-6 in it....

I am no longer using a V6-14 module if anyone is interested. I had two and returned one. I needed more than the 10 degree advance it provided.
