Add ons are hit or miss. I used an add on I didn't think I was going to make it back to the dock before I got killed. I had the full set up by the next week. Do a search, you can piece together the helm back to the rams for about half of a marine kit.

These add on systems are stiff at idle, i can vouch for that. I currently have the marine machine add on. If a full hydraulic is installed, is it any easier at idle?
I now have Marine Machine full hydraulic on my AT with twins. I can turn it with two fingers at idle. Big difference. I will add though that on my Pantera with add on, it was only about one full turn from lock to lock. On my AT its more like 2.5 turns from lock to lock. |

$1200 sounds about right. It is a pretty easy install, and the steering is almost effortless. On top of that, it stays where you put all the time. Step up to the full hydraulic, you won't regret it!

Ditto on what jayhawk said. If the helm/cable are shot, then definately go with full hydraulic. You will not regret it. Mine is just as easy to turn at idle as a standard cable non hyd system.

i put the drew set up on scarab 22, no more chime walk at all and i do 81 gps,, drew gives you a deal with his shot gun mufflers, made a big change in the boat

As far as effort at idle, how hard are we talking? I am looking at an Imco half system for the alpha, but I need an extra long ram due to exhaust outlet location, which will probably up the effort some. I have strong arms, but hoping to avoid unbearable effort....

If you try and turn it fast, it just gets harder. If you turn it slow, you can turn it easily with one hand. It jus can't circulate enough fluid fast enough at idle. Bumping it into neutral while turning, gets the rpms up which also helps.

If you have a boat with a fast idle, making it come into the docks quick, the stiff steering makes it a real pain in the ass. If you have to make a quick last minute change of direction, it can't be done. Not on my boat anyways. I didn't put the add on Marine Machine steering on, I bought it with it installed already, and being that i have a 80mph boat, i think it may be overkill, not sure, but i would go full hydro or not all, imo............ |
