Default front cover / oil pan seal

I pulled off my front cover (502, 1993) to fix a leaky front main seal. I did some searching here, and it looks like the consensus is to grind off the edge of the inner lip (which is what I was thinking before I searched) and to use plenty of black RTV when I put it back on.

The question I have, is it better to use a cut section of a new oil pan gasket, or is it better to just use black RTV to seal the bottom of the cover?

I REALLY don't want to have to take this back off. There's no way to get an impact on the puller with the motor in the boat (27' Fountain) and it probably took me an hour of cranking a wrench on that damn puller before the harmonic balancer finally came off. I REALLY want this to seal up right the FIRST time.

So, gasket + RTV or just RTV?

The gasket will probably squirt out if you try to piece it in.
