Default need more speed

i have a 1988 baja sport 240 (same as the outlaw 24)i had a 1997 merc 330 hp eng. in it did 60 mph ,the eng went south on me so i replaced it with a 454 392 hp long block, the eng would hit the rev. limiter at 4800 rpms at 63 mphs and i had about inch of throttle left,so i sent the prop out to the shop and had some more cup put in the prop, the boat did 63 at 4400 rpms,am i lugging the eng.the eng should trun 5000 rpms, should i go back to the prop shop and have it put back to the way it was and put a new ignition mod. with a rev. limiter that is set at 5150.with the new eng. the boat runs flat ,with the old eng the bow would be high is the hook in the hull have anything to do with this (is the extra speed pushing the bow down?) i think the boat should do 65 mphs with this setup thanks mike

It sounds like a prop problem to me. The mods to the prop seem to have taken the bow lift away. Try testing the boat with a box stock Mirage plus or Revolution 4 prop. 25p would be my guess.

The fastest prop should be a 23 Mirage Plus. You need a higher rev limiter and you're lugging it at 4400rpms. What prop are you running???

You said 392 hp long block????? How do you know its 392 hp if its was bought as a long block???? At what rpm???? Is it carbed and timed exactly the same as it was when the builder determined it was 392hp???

It takes about 400-420hp to run 65mph in a 24 Outlaw. They are also very bow light

i have a 23 marage plus now it is 24 or 25 ,the eng is a crate long block from cp marine 392 hp at 5100 ,i had a 25 marage on the boat and in a lite chop the boat ran 65 mph on the speedo at 4400 ,the eng was luggin to much so i took it off ,i sent the prop to be recuped and i was looking for the eng to be run in the 4700 rpms .the prop guy put too much cup in,i should give him the prop back and see if he can get me in the 4700 rpms and see how that works, and if that does not work go the new rev. limiter way.the eng has a rpm air gap man.a carter 750 carb and the stock merc ignition. imco exaust elbow and stock manifolds, thanks mike

Unless you run it at 5100rpms, its not going to make 392hp. At 4700, its probably more like 350hp. Get a new rev limiter and set it at 5200rpms.

BTW, don't get a GPS or you will be really disappointed.

It sounds like you bought a 454Mag long block to replace a 330HP/454. At the prop, you've only added 50-60HP so that may only translate to 3-5mph extra.
The 454 Mag needs to run above 4800 to make max power.
Like Griff said, you need an ignition that has a 5200 rpm rev limit or no rev limit at all.
If you're at 4400 with a 25p then a 23p would likely be the right prop.

I really doubt you will get 65 out of that setup. Maybe on the Lie-o-meter but not GPS, 62-63 tops. The 24 outlaws with 385hp came with 23" mirage props. Thatg is what you need to try

You need 500hp to get 70mph in a 24 OL. You're gonna need a lot more than cam and exhaust to gain 110hp.

Are you sure the timing is set correctly??????

As asked in your first post. The hook will keep the bow down and scrub speed. Some boats are designed with it for handling reasons. How much hook is there?? I don't remember there being any hook in my 24 OL.

You should find out from CP Marine what cam, intake and carb as well as what heads and comp ratio. Post that info here and you'll get a lot of help on how to wake it up.
You will need the headers or performace manifolds to make your HP withyour current combo as well as any upgrades.
