Wink BBC Piston Advice

It's probably a common question from the newly initiated, but, now that I've discovered the CR is really 7.93:1 with TRW L2377f pistons, 118cc heads, and the .038 steel gasket....is there a favourite piston maker you old timers (I should talk reach for?

I found "KEITH BLACK PISTONS CHEVY BBC 454 DOME -12cc" for $300/8, which will provide about 9.1:1 with the same setup. I'm aiming for 9.5:1, so I'm asking if anyone has any recommendations? Anyone?

What heads are you using? If chevy, what is the last 3 of the casting numbers?

I have really good luck with JE pistons.

JE will make anything you want. Costs a couple hundred more for the set up fee. I usually order parts from Scott at Dyno Flow. He buys so many of them that he usually sells them cheaper than the catalogs.

George is sending me some more stuff this week. That guy is like a living swap meet.

If you leave that enigne around 9-1 with those 118 heads you could get away with 4-5 lbs of boost in the future and still be on pupm gas.

Would make you around a 10.1:1 engine or therabouts.

Spend the extra cash on some good JE's and you won't have to buy them again. They'll hold up to the blower also. Make sure they build them as a flat top.

Thanks for the lead, the JE site is full of information..including a compression calculator for those looking for the formula.

Wait a minute, can you get 9:1 compression in a .030 454 w 118cc heads, without going to dome pistons? I figured I'd hang on to these 16 flat tops just in case....

In my build, we used TRW/Speed Pro L2465F-030 for a CR of about 9.5 - 9.6:1 with 118 - 119cc head. The TRW/Speed Pro stuff is good high quality strong forged stuff. They aren't the lightest, but they are a great piston.

Most of your after market big name pistons will be good. JE, Ross, Probe, etc... The Keith Black pistons are going to be Hypereutectic (sp?) if I remember correctly. They won't be as strong as forged. They are less expensive, but you may as well do it right while it is apart.

454 .030 Piston Advice

Manuf. Vendor Part Number Comp. Ratio Dome Volume Gram Weight Oversize
(FORGED) JE 212135 9.9 23cc 616 0.03
(FORGED) KB KB779 9.621 18cc na 0.03
(HYPER) KB KB201 9.1 12CC 710 0.03
(FORGED) ROSS ros83069 9.1 22cc 688 0.03
(FORGED) TRW L2465F30 9.621 25.7cc na 0.03

Hey - Jayhawk261

Thanks for the response - Interesting that SpeedPro only got 9.6 with a 25.7cc dome. The published cr's.....aren't on the same page across vendors.

I started to put together a comparison chart, but the information was all over the wall. The TRW L2377F pistons in my Gen V's - from the TRW site:"These pistons are not compatible with Gen V or Gen VI engines. Chamfer design. Approximate compression ratios: and 7.64:1 with 119cc head" - isn't that just dandy -
Prices are $300 for the KB hyper, $600 for the JE, Ross was over $700
I'm thinking I want to go on the lighter side as I'm sure this won't be the last time I have them apart...I want some revs - I'd like to see 5800 - 6000 at WOT.

Use the JE's if you are going to rev them that high. SRP's are OK to. The kb's are not really that good for what you are trying to do.
