You would think that Mercury would put a product on the engine (CMI's) that would last as long as the warranty..... :(

Lostinboston, I feel for you, I just got my boat back in August after having to rebuild a 525 from a CMI header failure and the NEW header failed in 4 hours destroying another engine! CMI says they will NOT warranty anything. I am going to send a letter to the CEO of Brunswick. I suggest the same.

I hate reading all this on the CMI issues.

While looking for a new boat with 500's or 525's now I'm scared $hiteless. I have to re-think this.

Dont just not buy a boat because of the headers thats on it:eek:

How can Merc/Brunswick do that? The CMI's are std equipment on the 525 and come out of the crate that way. That like saying if the block failed they won't stand behind it because its GM not Mercury. I feel for you guys. I think Id be getting a lawyer on it.

This is an interesting post because I have been looking at boats with 500efis and 525s. Dont both use the same header and what are some signs to look for to spot problems? Is it a certin cylinder. Thanks for the help.

The only real way to check for problems is to remove the header and pressure check. If you're having the boat surveyed and doing a leakdown and compression check, make pressure checking the headers part of your normal routine. I pressure check my headers EVERY year once I winterize the engines. This year I found 5 tiny leaks out of the 4 headers.... Gotta check them on a regular basis....

When I buy a car from GM, the exhaust system attached to the engine is warrantied with the car... If Merc. is truely doing this they need to spend more R&D on exhaust systems that LAST.... :eek:

What did you or are you going to do about the leaks you found. I have twin 500 efi's with 250 hrs on them and they run fine but this CMI leak thing makes me nervous.

I have a welder that I have known for years, he specializes in marine systems. He can fix them most of the time. Very well known for his reputation in my area...
