intercoolers and superchargers

I have 850s hp with superchargers with no intercoolers or chillers.I've heard salt water have a tendency to corrode the inside therefore going inside the motor causing a disaster.
What do you guys think????Any experience???

Smitty 02-26-2008 09:58 PM

If the chillers are made of Cupronickel, then salt will not bother them.

besides that the engines would probably go before that happens

matador 02-26-2008 10:34 PM

Well I spoke with a reputable engine builder looking to upgrade for easy reliable horsepower and didnt give me a good vibe.He said i would have to be extremely carefull and even so I could be in trouble...I dont get it why then....

Well it seems your builder is in the minority on this. Most builders use innercoolers on blower engines. I think you have a higher risk of blowing the engine from detonation without a cooler then a water leak maybe causing an issue.

Right On!

Lets see, every single "TOP" engine builder uses innercoolers. What does that tell ya?

I have a set up to pressure test my intercoolers that is similar to the set up I use to pressure test my headers, Both can be used without removing the components from the motor! Not a bad practice (maybe a little over kill) to test at each oil change!

Not using an intercooler on a blown boat motor makes no sence. You have an unlimited supply of cold water, and it's "almost" like free hp.

Thats just about the silliest thing I've heard.

So what you are saying Whipple is, I had better get a intercooler. 2006 516 2.3 Whipple Blown EFI BB Chevy 700hp @ 5psi. I run the lakes here in Az, 110 in the shade during August.

HotPursuit 02-28-2008 11:31 PM

12 years running inter coolers with out a single failure. It makes no sense not to cool the intake charge. For every degree cooled you could see a gain of 1 HP + or - a few percent depending on the cooler you run.

Dustin can help with this project. :drink:

Don't understand ? Is the sillest thing to think not to intercool
or to actually intercool or not intercool that is the Question ?

Anyway I am thinking of ordering intercoolers with superchargers , unless they are not needed to make
1000 HP.

question, how about if the itercooler happen to crack does it mean water goes inside and your motors is gone???

Brad Zastrow 03-03-2008 10:38 AM

I am not sure why you are even asking about this? Run the intercooler!!!!! I did have one leak years ago. It made the oil milky and we replaced the cooler and changed the oil. No big deal. Detonation is a serious issue on blower enignes under the constant load of a boat. You must have a intercooler period. Cars can get away without as they seldom are under load for more than a few seconds.

thanks, Brad for the advice;though I dont understand why they made it like this to begin with....

Motors can certainly be built without IC's, they need lower compression, and or less timing, richer air fuels, etc. so no, you don't have to, but it's great HP for the $$ in most cases. 5psi is pretty low, so there's not as much heat build up, therefore less you can take away, but in generaly, yes, you have a huge supply of water all around you.

My motors are 572's producing 850hp @ 5psi at a pretty conservative timing, what gain in great hp's are we talking about to gain with I.C for the $$ .....

My estimate would be 50hp without much of a change, possible a touch of timing and a leaner jet. Get the boost up and you can get around 100hp pretty easily.

Thanks,
Dustin
