700 sci/ 600 sci fuel filter

I cant let the filter post die yet , wix 57003r for the oil has 30 gpm flow rate versus 28 gpm flow rate for the 51222r i have ordered a wix 57003r to compare against the merc filter on my desk , gonna cut both in 1/2 and let you guys know. If you go to wix filter website and zoom in on picture its is identical to the merc filter on my desk as i speak.

Now on to the next find for 700 sci/ 600 sci motors
------------------------------------------------------------
the metal fuel filter on the back of the motor (not the spin on fuel filter in the front )

Merc is getting 178.00 $ for this made in china at about 3 bucks a piece , start your hunting for someone who make this
at a lot less than 178.00 smackers ( i have already started the process but need all of you motorheads help on this )

Actually these Merc oil filters are reasonably priced...for their V-6 applications.

http://www.mercurypartsexpress.com/u...ml#tab1Content

Also, their water seperation filter is $10.00..

Gotta wonder why their Racing Filters are so much morre costly..?

Many oil filters that are exactly equal are made on the same assembly line and then painted differently.

aTX427 07-06-2008 08:02 PM

Do you know who makes the Merc Racing filter?

Which is best alternate?
Fram HP6
Mobil 1 M1-501
Wix 51222R

Not sure who makes the Merc filter.

The M-1 and Wix are great.

Fram seems to have redesigned the HP-a series and the filter goes down to 12 microns. Looks like a real good filter as well. This "a" series racing filter is definately one I would try out.

wix 57003r is the filter to buy

matches the merc 35-840634k01 perfect, i cut both in half and took apart to compare (Identical ) the box my merc filter came in shows this filter fits all of mercs blower motors same part # for merc.

wix has to build this filter for merc because i put a mic on every part in the filter and they are identical

Wix 57003r

This is an Advanced Performance Oil Filters use a media (T-10) that is rated at a Frazier Air Flow of approximately 267 CFM and is wire backed. The unique wire backing provides a very stable base for a media blend of fiberglass, polyester and cellulose. This media is resistant to high temperatures and water levels in the oil that can plug standard media types. Advanced Performance Media (T-10) is designed to provide a high positive oil flow with low restriction.

These are the Wix recommended oil filters for maximum horsepower increase, to be used primarily on concrete or asphalt trucks.

Wix 5122R

High Efficiency Endurance Oil Filters use a media (T-71) rated at a Frazier Air Flow of approximately 75 CFM. This media contains a higher resin content than our Advanced Performance Oil Filters to trap and hold smaller contaminants and provide higher efficiency. High Efficiency Endurance Oil Filters include all the other component features as the Advanced Performance Oil Filters.

Part numbers 51060R, 51061R, 51069R and 51794R will fit most Chevrolet V-8's. 51515R fits Ford and Chrysler. 51222R, 57005R and 57006R require mounting on a remote filter base.

I think the Wix 5122R is what is most similiar to Merc's Oil Filters Internals.

Beak Boater 07-07-2008 03:44 PM

Thanks guys, so now the $500 question, which is better? Higher flow rate of the 57003, or 2gpm lower flow rate of the 51222r, and traping smaller contanimants.

Here's the deal:

Well you have to respect the fact that the Wiix 57003r is less apt to plug if water gets in the oil.

You guys have me guessing now as to which is most similiar to Merc's...both will work...I might consider the 57003r over the 5122r...as I like the glass media..and perhaps greater flow in a 500 Hp and bigger motor is more important..

Yea...my vote is for the Wix 57003r..it is a more advanced design...now it's price as of July 1, 2008 is $27.95.:p

(Not that the 5122r is a bad choice)

Does the wix you cut apart have a draindown valve ?? Wix tech will not commit to anything. I offered to send them a filter..no response

I hate guessing when warrenties are involved.

aTX427 07-07-2008 07:53 PM

The Wix Wix 5122R literature mentiones a By-Pass Valve Setting-PSI of 18-22. What is that for? I usually get the Mobil 1 filters based on their product review and local availability. I cannot find the M1-501 anywhere. Found the Wix 57003R on flebay - Qty 6 for $129.95. The same store (Complete Filtration Services) has the Wix 5122r in a case of 6 for $89.95 plus $10 for shipping, which seems very reasonable.

As hydrocruiser said a ways back in this post (change oil often in a blower motor) I will use the wix 57003r , im keeping a brand new merc filter in stock if something goes wrong put merc filter back on before going to dealer. Also when i cut the 2 filters apart all markings on oring 3 red lines , metal stamp #s inside to thickness of liners / metals etc etc all matched to the point i could not find anything different, colors of liners matched , 8 drain holes etc etc all matched .

thanks for all the feedback questions

yes it does , every part of merc filter matched the wix 57003r

the only difference i saw was the decals on the outside of filters

i wasted 100.. buscks on cutting these two (brand new ) filters open

merc 71.00
wix 30.00

Wix Filters and Donaldson Oil FIlters are now available at Amsoil's website. Amsoil has a "new" filter that is similiar to the Wix...real similiar..:drink:

Those EA oil filters are no where near a WIX. They absolutely blow them out of the water. AMSOIL's secondary supplier is Wix. They have been in a partnership for almost two years now. The insides of the EA oil filters are a completely different media than what Wix uses.

Does Amsoil make an equivalent for the Fram racing HP 4 and HP 6?

No, because of the high flow rate of those Fram numbers. No, they would supply you the Wix 51222R=HP6 or the 51060R=the HP4.

Automotive Oil FIlters have a bypass valve generally set to around 14-16 psi and Racing FIlters to around 20-22 psi. That is how they get their flow up along with efficient media.

So Amsoil is not into the racing end so it hanles Wix and Donaldson.

FYI:

Clarcor manufactures:

Baldwin
Hastings
Amsoil
Casite

Champion Labs

Bosch
Car and Driver
Deutsch
Mobil 1
STP
SuperTech
K&N

Wix = NAPA

How come we have not been talking much about Baldwin filters? Rex Marine sells them.

Hydrocruiser 07-10-2008 02:01 PM

FYI....NASCAR has pretty much moved to Wix Racing..

They used to use the "Orange Cans" but had problems.
maybe the new ones are better.?

Hydrocruiser 07-11-2008 08:56 PM

A number of custom engine builders are still use the Fram HP...anyone here like them?

The new HP a's look real good.

Clarcor does NOT manufacturer AMSOIL Ea oil filters. WIS does most of the assembly with media from the Amsoil / Donaldson partnership.

AMSOIL does have an EaO filter with the same dimensions as the 51060R which is WIX's replacement for the HP4. Amsoil does not make any filters with the 1 1/2" threads that the HP6 uses.

The HP4 replacement is the EaO24 and I can get those for $13.15 plus shipping. The 57003R would be $24.95 ea.

It might be the same dimensions, however, did you check the PSI on it? The filter cross reference doesn't bring up any number, but a Wix.

Like the 51060 and 51060R there is no bypass valve. Most GM filters are like this due to the bypass in the engine instead of the filter. The bypass PSI is mostly irrelevant in all but startup and plugged conditions. The filters will rarely ever push oil past the bypass when running. Hook up a pressure gauge before and after the filter and check the pressure differential yourself. You will find a 4-5PSID in most cases, far from popping even the lower 9PSID bypass valves.

That's true.

Farquar 08-01-2011 07:09 PM

This really happened,a mechanic punched a hole in the oil filter to facilitate drainage, and dislodged a plastic disk that went into the oil tube and caused an oil blockage when more oil pressure was needed. Mercruiser quotes this as having happened.
