Default Oil Pressure-how much is too much?

575 SCI motors- here is the scoop.
Starboard motor seems to be fine - oil pressure 50 psi(cruise),water temp 120 (gauge)/115 with pyrometer at t-housing ,oil temp 155 gauge /149-pyro-no oil consumption.
Port - oil pressure 70psi (cruise), water temp 110 (gauge)/120 pyro,oil temp-Gauge not working,132 pyro.
The motors are newly rebuilt with about 7 hours on them. The port motor(higher oil pressure) puffs a cloud of smoke on restart when warm and is burning oil (I ran it yesterday for an hour and it used about 1 quart of oil (thanks Dereberry!)
Is 70 psi too high? I have to deal with the oil consumption (valve guide seals?), but I have had the boat for a year now and am going on my first river trip with it and will just keep an eye on the level. But the 70+psi oil pressure concerns me. I was thinking of pulling out the 25w-50 valvoline racing oil I just put in it and switching that motor to 10w-30. And no these numbers are not confimed with a mechanical gauge.
Thanks

You may just have a gauge off a little. You wont know until you put a mech gauge on it first.

The fresh piston rings may have not ""seated" themselves yet, hence the oil burning.

Anything over 55-60 psi is just wearing components an heating your oil up. Running hard on that much pressure taxes the drive rod and the cam/distributor gear. It may also pop a filter or gasket.

If they were mine, I'd want to know what's different inside of them. They could have been in a rush and tossed a different pump into the one. As far as oil consumption, again, what's different between the engines?

I would also get oil t-stat on your setup. You need to get the oil up to temp to burn off condensation and to bring the oil up to proper op temp. Lastly, racing oil is for racing. Not for an engine that sits. I don't know what they recommended for break in but 7 hours should be past that. I'd switch to Mobil 1 v-twin or an equivalent.

and get a thermostat in the thing. those water temps are way way to cold to keep that motor alive. if this thing has had the ususal big " marine clearences" put in it , at those temps the pistons are probably sideways in the bores.

Oil temps are too cold. Don't those engines have oil thermostats? If you get the oil up to 200 deg., oil pressure should be just about right.

more than likely the pumps are the same(should be) but the clearances in the motors are differnt and that will change the oil pressure...I would not worry about it to much, see how it goes after 40 hours of so, 70 won't hurt anything, just eats up power, Rob

Thanks for all the advice guys, wow their are more opinions on oil pressures and oil brands than whatthere is about who builds the best boat. I am going to the River next week ,so I will just watch things like a hawk ,take it easy and deal with it when I get back. I am still pissed that Leon at Dereberry never called me back after I spent 34k at his shop last year (only have 6-7 hrs on the motors and one smokes and burns a qt of oil every 1-2 hrs). Oh well, thats another thread..Mike
