Leaking oil at cruising speeds

The oil is dripping down the oil filter so of course I thought the filter was bad. I replaced it and got the same result. Hoses and connections all look good. Has anyone ever broke or cracked an oil filter mounting plate?

You may want to get some oil dye to help pinpoint the leak.

Bad oil filter housing flange surface? Maybe you're just overtightening the filter causing the gasket to blow out. I've never had a filter leak at the housing flange.

oil filter flange

did you check the gasket under the oil filter flange?

Thanks guys. By the time I found the leak, and replaced the oil filter I ran out of time so I will investigate further this weekend. I definitely did not over tighten the filter though. It's really the strangest leak I've seen. It took two of us over an hour to find. Seems like I'm losing about 1 quart per hour of running time.

Maybe a double-gasket. They can get stuck on there pretty good.

What Chris said. :grinser010: Just had a friend who had to change his oil by himself and left the old filter sealing ring on and toasted a 454 by the time he found the leak and problem. At least you are better off.

Procharged 350. Filter is in remote location.

I was extremely lucky myself.... It's not a double gasket problem either. The plate the oil filter sits on was smooth as can be and the old gasket came right off.
