I was concerned about one of my motors last year and bought a bore scope so I could se the top of the pistons through the plug holes....look like when they went in just some black/burnt residue on the tops.

4.5 hrs should look damn near new. Very little discoloration if all is well.

the pistons had some black burnt residue on them also but a little wet or shiny looking, while some of them still look new around the edge but black residue in the middle?plugs are tan then start to get a little tan/black going toward the rear of the engine

It has alot to do with the fuel system. If it has a Holley and it gets idled alot, you can expect the domes to be gunked up a bit. Holley's aren't the best idling thing out there.

It runs great you guess. Is there a concern with the engine? Like Chris said if it idles alot it will be loaded up. All depeneds on how your driving it. It will have some carbon on it either way.
