I know this to be fact thru my own testing,if you flow a set of afr 315's and get 370 cfm intake then bolt on a dual plane the flow drops to around 280-300 cfm killing off most top end,Smitty

-Roller 741 cam, crane roller rockers

About 5700-5800rpm is what I have seen a 741 cam do in a naturally aspirated 540cid engine on the dyno with a single plane intake and fully ported Dart Pro-1 heads by JimV.

It won't rev like that with the GM heads. More like 5400.

you need more cfm, i did a pair of 540's with the 741 cam and we made the first pulls with a 800 cfm carb. Then used a adapter to put a 1050 on the motor and picked up 37 hp and 44 ft lbs of tq at the same rpm. Also with the 800 the motor was done a 5300 it went to 5800 with the 1050

Use a fairly large cam with a long duration exhaust lobe to crutch the poor flowing stock exhaust port and you're all set. That;s what the 741 was designed for. I think the 731 wil struggle to make 550 hp in this instance. It's a good 454 cam but it's pretty mild even in a 502.
dead on
