Default 502 mag 195 hrs

Quick question: Just picked a 2000 25 outlaw with 502 mag. Took it out for the 1st time and used a quart of oil in about 4hrs with a about 10 fast rides. No leaks/no smoke runs @190 and runs great. Is this common with these engines? Thanks

Yes, they use low tension oil rings and consume quite a bit of oil. Using dino oil will be slightly better, but they just use oil. Never fouled a plug and when I redid my heads this year they showed very little carbon build up.

my expierence with BBC's s they will almost always burn of the top qt quickly. Nature of the beast. The 4 hrs seems a little fast but I would not worry about it. Just check the level every time you use the boat.

ofchowe.... what runs at 190? Your engine temp? Oil pressure? If so then something isn't right. Engine temp should be 165 t0 170 on a 502 Mag

My 502 mag mpi's run about 180* on the water temp guage.

My oil consumption went down about 50% when I switched to Mobil1 15-50. Uses a quart about every 8-10 hours now.

my 25Ol with a 502 uses oil pretty quickly as well. What is normal Oil PSI? It generally only will run 25 PSI and may get as high as 38 at 5000 RPM. Boat still runs strong and seems stout but concerned about the usage of oil and the apparent low PSI

My 2000 Baja w/502 used alot of oil new, after dealer attempted to fix it and let my motor freeze in the parking lot I pulled it myself (brand new) and upgraded it. As Mentioned, they use J/E pistons 4.466 bore pistons with a metric low tension ring package. J/E makes a replacement piston that is 4.470 and uses a std tension std dimension ring , the weight of the piston is so close you can get away without balancing and block can be deck plate honed to 4.470 without boring either. That is what I did years ago, if the problem gets too annoying its is a solution you can consider, Smitty

That is low for WOT oil pressure, you should be aroun 60psi at WOT. When you idle down from a long, hot run does the oil psi get down around 10-15? If so you might want to consider having your rod and main bearings refreshed before you end up with a really big bill.

Also dont trust just the gauge on the dash, connect a mechanical gauge and verify the readings are correct

total seal makes a set of rings for that motor that fix the problem complete. i did mine w/ them at about 250 hours because they were apart already and they are brilliant.
