Default Increasing Boost

Yeah, you can tell when I work from the home office...

Since it looks like I'm probably hanging on to the Shooter for this season, I'd like it to go a little faster (big surprise).

I have a 97 454 Magnum with a B&M/Holley 174 Powercharger on it. It has about 4lbs of boost through it according to the gauge. I'd like to know if I go to the next smaller pulley will it grenade? I'd assume it would run at about 6lbs. I can run this all day long at full throttle (NYC Poker runs) and it never complains right now, does heat up a little but nothing of great concern. The motor has just under 200 hours and is in great shape. I know a bunch of you out there are running a similar setup. Also, is it worth it, i.e. how much more HP. This setup dyno'd at 525Hp before MSD and Crossover (like that matters). I emailed Holley for their input.

holley probaly won;t help. If they says it fine (and they don;t support tier marine stuff very well) and you grenade it because of detonation where are they?

If you are concerned abotu heat biuld up superchiller makes an intercooler for the 174. Search back a month or two there was a thread on it. Or if you want to run higher boost you coudl just use 93+ octant fuel.

I'd rather not plunk another 1500 bucks into this boat for an intercooler, seeing I'm looking to sell it this season or next. I already run 92 octane all the time.

If it is for sale don't touch it. 6 lbs. of boost without intercooling is trouble, especially if you run hard. If you do damage the engine you will need to replace it to sell it, leaving less money for new boat.

New thought,

Bobby at BlueLightning said that I have "more in the timing". I'm using a Tbolt IV. Can advancing a little get some more perfromance and be less stressful than increasing the boost? Just a thought...
