Default 454 Fuel Problems...I Think

I have a carburated 454 Mag. Last weekend I was heading back to the ramp for the day and as I was backing up it died. It took forever to get it restarted. Kind of smelled like it was flooded. After started it ran fine for a minute and then I stopped again. After that I could not get over 3000 rpms with out it surging really bad. It now starts and idles fine, but will not even come on plane.

I have changed the fuel filter and the fuel pump may have 20 hours on it.

Could I have fouled plugs?

Any suggestions?

I had a boat one time that after winterization and fogging, upon spring run it would not go. It would idle great, rev up great, but try to get on plane it would fall flat. Fouled plugs it was. But I would go over the carb in detail, something caused it to flood like a stuck float or metering rod jumped out of the jet (if qjet). They usually don't foul to this point just by normal running.

make sure you check the steel line from seperator to fuel pump carefully. have seen them crack and since its on suction side it sucks air instead of fuel. Unless its breaking up and backfiring then i would check plugs/wires, but it sounds like fuel. good luck
