If you are using mineral oil you may begin to break down the lubrication properties if you let it get much over 240 F. Synthetic oil will not break down if your temp happens to go over 240, but unless you have money on the line there is no reason to let the oil get hotter than 250 degrees. If it is routinely getting this hot it may be time to increase your oil cooler capacity. Don't go too large or your oil may be too cool to boil off condensation. The ideal situation is a very large cooler with a 220 degree thermostat. Just my opinion. Good luck.
