Nordic Heat - 600sci motor upgrade
Just sent my PCM off to Whipple to get re-programed along with some other Dustin sugested upgrades.
1. Upgrading the PCM to raise the rev limit to 6000rpm from the current 5400rpm rev limit. Alter the timing curve and spark output. Increase the electronic boost bypass from the factory set 4.5 lbs to 7.5 lbs of boost. 2. Exchange the 4 inch blower pulley for a 3.25 inch pulley. Dustin says that this pulley will produce 7.5-8.5 lbs of boost. He is electronically limiting the boost on my boat to 7.5 lbs because he says my relatively mild cam will not support any more boost than this. The stock 700sci pulley is 3.5 inches and produces between 6 and 7 lbs of boost. Boost on the 700sci is limited to 7lbs. I will be upgrading to the 700sci cam or bigger in some future year. 3. Re-route the water inlet to the inner-cooler. In stock configuration, the innercooler water is taken off the power steering cooler. This is located after the oil cooler, and after the fuel cooler, making the teed-off water going to the innercooler, not that cool at all. The outlet on the power steering cooler will be blocked off, and a new T will come off just after the sea pump. Exit water from the innercooler will be dumped directly overboard instead of thru the exhaust. All of this will raise my required fuel octane from 87 to 91. Dustin has told me to prop the boat for aproximately 5800rpm. This is for valvetrain longativity, and the fact that he says that my smallish 600sci cam really doesnt produce any more power beyond that. He also says that my combo should produce aproximately 750 hp +/-, with aproximately the same number for torque. I am hoping to hit the 90mph mark, but realize that this will also probably require some more prop/spacer setup work. Currently the boat is going between 80 and 84 with 80-81 being the norm. The 84mph speed was set with a Hering 26 5 blade on the rev limiter at 5400 rpm. Slip was at 5.2%. I will not be using this prop because I think the increased hp, along with 5.2% slip, is a recipe for a broken outdrive. Initial testing will be done with my benchmark 28 Bravo, which has been worked on, but I feel that I will probably be going to a 30 Bravo in some modified configuration. Good Luck with your upgrades. I have twin 600's in my boat and have thought about the same things you are doing. I've read that the 600's are detuned by Merc. Are you doing the work yourself or having a builder do it? Let us know how it comes out! Mark |
Those changes have to be the best bang-for-the-buck 150 HP most could ever imagine! Very smart tweaks to get the max out of that set-up. Thanks for sharing and let us know how it works out.

Just got back from Portland and OCM where I did some water testing with the new Whipple upgrades. Just to recap, my boat was doing a consistant 80-81mph with the stock 600sci motor and lots of time on prop/spacer testing.
My best run was at 91.1mph using a stock Bravo 30 at 5800rpm. I did not get a digital photo of that run, but got one in the 90mph+ range. The 90.4mph run was done using a Hering 27 pitch prop. With my propshaft at 5" below the keel, I am getting chine walk at above 88mph. Especially with the 5 blade Hering. My plan is to start removing spacer to see if I can settle the boat down and remove or help the chine walk at speed. I love the way the boat accelerates... especially between 60 and 85 mph. The Whipple sounds like a turbine when it starts producing boost at around 3500 rpm, and sets you back in the seat. I picked up aproximately 10 mph for about a $2000 investment.
