N/A 540cid or supercharger
I would like to build a motor over the winter next year for my boat. I was thinking a 502 based n/a stroker motor like a 540cid. Well after thinking about it iam up in the air with a N/A stroker motor or a blower motor. I would like to make 500-600 relible hp. I allready have a good running 454 330hp motor in the boat.
So here it goes. If I do a stroker 502 its going to be a gen6 block which none of my 454 stuff will swap over to. The stroker 502 will need a good camshaft and roller lifters, Alum heads, intake, etc to make the power I want N/A. If I do the blower motor it will be using my 454 but of course will be rebuilt with a "better" set of iron heads, blower cam,etc I can reuse my front cover, oilpan, etc and will make the hp goal easily. So do I do the stroker motor or blower motor? Also if I do a blower motor which blower set-up should I do Roots, centif, or wipple? Thanks Erik What would be |
Your 330 has all cast internals and most likely has 2 bolt mains. If its a 2 bolt block, forget it. If its a 4 bolt block, you could stroke it to a 496ci. Find the block casting number and look it up on www.mortec.com
All of the parts you would need for an NA 540 would also be needed if you wanted to SC the 454. |

Ron Sprol Has built 3 Motors For me and one Was Super charged made 825 HP
The Two other Motors Were Merc Fuel injected Made 675 each No Problems at all He Had a motor in Power boat last mouth in a Red Line cat 160 hours on Twins 165 on the super charged Solid motors Call Him 504-616-6005 Or Me Gerald 423-593-5841 |
A naturally aspirated 540cid engine is more than adequate for the power you are wanting....500-600hp. Actually, a 502 will still do the job nicely and still not require any assistance from a blower.

I Agree 540 with AFR's and cams 650 HP no problem, stay away from the blowers if you dont want to be a weekend wrencher.

Ok thanks guys. Looks like i'll stick with N/A.

Blower engines can be plenty reliable and don't require hardly any added maintanance if built correctly.
If your 454 is a 4 bolt block, you can easily stroke it to a 496 and make 500+ HP easily. |

If your 454 is a 4 bolt block, you can easily stroke it to a 496 and make 500+ HP easily. But, a studded two bolt block is plenty strong. I've run lots in the 500hp to 600hp range with zero failures. I've got a two bolt 496 in a customers commercial jet boat with 1600 hours on the bottom end.. :ernaehrung004: |
