If you arent looking for chartplotter then how about simply a GPS Speedo?

If thats what you decide, let me know and I'll make sure you get the best price.

Are you looking for a hand held G.P.S. or something larger? Either way I would say Garmin is a very good choice because they are very user friendly. If you get one make sure the screen is viewable in direct sun light. The new Garmins are.

West marine has the Garmin 478, which doubles as an automotive unit, and comes preloaded with software on sale for $599

Ditto on the Garmin. Got the GPSMAP 378 and it is easy to see the screen in the sun.

378 and 478 are the same unit, except 378's software is for inland lakes, and 478 is coastal

I would not recommend a Garmin. I have had 4 and 3 died within a year of new. They are too expensive to be throw aways. Garmin is happy to fix them for about the retail price of a new one. Look elsewhere.
