I have the standard quicksilver surface mount shifter. It all works just fine but the stick is to sloppy for my likeing. can this be tightened up? How, I cant seem to get the neutral button off?

The only way you can remove the neutral button is you need to push it in then go to W O T. Then pry it out from the back side of the button with something like a small flat blade. Try not to damage the paint on the shifter while prying. then go to neutral, You will need a 11/16 socket. The nut should have lock tite on it already. I believe the specks is [150] inch pounds. When done just push the button back in while in neutral. that is a insiders trick that i should not have told any one so the service shops can stay in bizz.
