which oil pump ?
Need to purchase oil pumps for new Gen 6 540's. Haven't gotten the specifics on the pan yet but I figure 12qt. at least. I've seen the Melling Select mentioned before. Any suggestions?

I just rebuilt 3 engines this winter, used Mellings 10778c pumps. Some guys will say use Mellings 10778 pump. Melling says the c pumps are anti-cavitation and are designed for higher rpm use. I talked to Teague, they strickly use the C pumps, so I went along with them. I am sure either will be fine.

Looks like the other question I need to ask is if the Gen 6 pumps are the same as the old Mk4 pumps. Seems like most manufacturers just say fits big block and don't specify. When I set the search filter at Summit to Gen 6 the only oil pump that comes up is one from GM.

The Melling 10778c says it causes lower oil pres at idle, is this a bad thing? It says becuase of the anti cav grooves, the oil pressure at idle is reduced. Not that I plan on spending much time at idle, but I thought it might cause issues getting the oil through the cooler and up to temp Before I get stuck into the revs.
Any thoughts? Sorry for the thread jack BCK, I'm in the same situation as you trying to find which pump to use!
I suppose if Teague use it, it's good enough for me, I just need convincing!

The weather here has been terrible lately. So, I havent got the chance to run these engines much. I did get the chance to put about 1 hr on the pair of Gen VI 575 I built. I can say hat there were no issues so far. Pressure was at 40 psi hot. I am hoping to run the other engine this weekend, in between the rain drops.

Ghostrider- No problem. It' something I was wondering as well. Looks like there are a few models to choose from, but I guess the 10778(c) seems popular. I guess I would want to get a drive from ARP or does Melling have a good one?

Talkig about oil pump drives..... Last year, I broke mine and didnt even know it, until I tore the engine down for a freshen up. The engine had nearly 140 hours. This drive is an ARP. I have no answer as to how or why this broke. Nothing was seized or rubbing, I simply dont know what happened. When I spoke to Teague about pumps, they claim they have seen this failure before. Blame it on the design of the drive. They sold me their drives when I ordered the pumps from them. When matching up their drive to ARP, they look almost identical. Maybe the material is different, not sure. In any case, I am running Teague drives for this year.
