Default thingy the oil filter screws into???

First off what is its proper name? I have been callign ita thingy for far to long. Second my old one was mounted on my risers. it had 2 extra long bolts thet went through it and actually bolted the riser to the manifold. Well i got CI and i had to jerry rig a moutn for it. I want to get rid of teh rjeryy rig and set it up properly. I have seen ones taht mount to teh block. Is there an aftermarket version i shoudl check out or should I just get a merc one?

Also i use Fram HP4 oil filters if i get a new filter holder thingy will teh HP4 fit or shoudl i use a different filter?

First thing, get rid of the Frams! Go to NAPA and get their Racing Filter, made by Wix, or get the Mobil1 filter. I have always called it the Oil Filter housing, and I believe Dollar Offshore has some nice ones.

1st off, if you ain't going to call it a thingy any longer, at least quit saying you are going to jerry rig it. If I rigged it, everyone would want me to do theirs too!

2nd. it's a remote filter mount.

The Original JERRY rig rigger.

The idea I know of concerning Fram vs Wix is this: Both have high pressure relief valves. Fram uses a crush spring to regulate pressure, Wix uses a compression spring. In a boat with heavy oil, say 25w-50 on a cold day, or a fresh tight engine, you could get a pressure spike that crushes the fram crush spring and offloads the oil past the filter. That is good for cars that never get an oil change and would not get oil with a clogged filter w/o the bypass. What is bad is that if you get a pressure spike due to reving the engine high when cold or some other OP spike, the bypass is activated without reversal. With a Wix compression spring return, the valve can absorb a spike, then return to normal filtering. Fram keeps dump oil past the filter because the bypass is open.

I like the Wix

I get mine from Napa. They have the BBC filter number if you ask. Most places that carry Wix also have a cut away filter on display that they can show you of the filter. Other private label filters out there that have the same construction. Once you see the cut away you can alway tell by looking down the center if it is compression spring regulated or not. Some people probably prefer the crush type, this is only my opinion.

The Wix racing filter is boxed and labelled as the Napa Racing Filter. the filter for the HP500EFI is 1061R. I think it costs about $13 bucks. I read the Oil Filter study some time ago listed here on OSO. VERY, VERY INFORMATIVE!
