Site crashed so the link won't work. I do realize that but the brochure was put together by ExxonMobil, from Fairfax Virginia, their headquarters. It was a good presentation of the history and technology behind Mobil 1.
http://www.mobil1.com.au/why/outstanding.aspx Mobil 1 is a global formulation and because ExxonMobil produces many of their own base oils and profits from selling base oils to blenders like Amsoil, they can afford to have global formulations that are of the same chemistry. http://www.mobil1.com.au/what/index.aspx Enjoy. |
correct. amsoil oil guys are like mac users. they have seen the light and are true believers. nothing fact or reality based will change or sway their opinion and they are committed to universal change. i think i saw them hanging around in orange robes at the airport last week converting the wayward masses.

Oil analysis is very limited, unless you also use ferrography and get a particle count. Most wear metals detected are extremely small. I have seen reports where one oil showed lower wear metals, but the wear was actually more severe than the oil with higher wear metals. This was confirmed by a ferrography run.
You are absolutely right though in that Amsoil does make some of the best oils on the market. They have some really nice oils now. Their motorcycle oils are great. Some of their oils are just average though. http://www.eclubes.com.au/system/app...05-27-2008.pdf Working now. Pages 10-15 show how extensive engine testing is performed. 4-ball wear machine is a cheap bench test set at a fixed rpm and temperature. Completely irrelevant to real world conditions. |

I'm. The TBN on the Merc stuff was a measly 8. That, IMO, is garbage. It meets minimum specs.
TBN in todays world means nothing. There is such little sulfur in diesel oil TBN is a moot point. The TBN in Amsoil is high because they are promoting 10K oil changes in diesels, which until recently had to have high TBN numbers due to the amount of sulfur in diesel fuel. But even the sulfur level in todays diesel fuel has been cut drasticly. In a gas engine like a boat, the factory recommended oil with a TBN of 8 is more than enough. The boat owner will change way before the TBN in the oil goes away. Ken |

You do realize, whats available in Europe is not necessarily available here in the States.

Here we go again..

I like Amsoil. I use Mobil 1. Ask yourself, how many enignes have you seen wear out or suffer a mechanical failure related to oil if they were run with the proper viscosity oil that was changed at proper intervals? There are motors running around with 300K on them using dino oil. Synthetics have their place but for the majority of consumers they are unnecessary. I just wish I could go down to O'Reilly's and pick up Amsoil instead of having to join what seems like Amway to buy it! I only responded to this thread as I am trying to get to 2000 posts!
