Early Mach 1 Boats
My first time, guys. Anyone out there with the older Mach 1's? I have a 1987 27 footer w/twin 454's. Since Envision boats went out of business, I have no contacts for information on these boats.
|
is the name of the boat aquaholic?
|
shipfaced just sold one with twin 350's he had it a long time.
|
not sure on the 27's but was told years ago that the 22-23 was built from molds from chris crafts scorpion model....looked buying one in 86...Rob
|
I was told it was a splash of the old wellcraft/scarab s hull. I had a 27' with twin 454's 1987 with alphas. I had a blast with that boat when I had it. Lots of fun with very little trouble.
|
Different hull
Bill Felt started Mach 1 Boats after being an officer in the Glasstex (Glasstek?) line. The hulls were his own design.
Mine is an '87 with twin 454's as well. I've had fun with it and it flys...:boat: I'll be re-gauging it this winter with a set of Livorsi's. Can't wait. |
Older mach 1's were built by Felt Industries. Sold to Freedom Boats then finally to BAHA. I would have to say the Felt Ind boats were better. Had a condor that flew, beat most boats in its class ran a small block(built) with beefed up Alpha Drive. They are heavy but they cut waves like a hot knife though butter. I am considering buying another one. The only problem finding a clean well taken care of Mach 1.

I have an 1989 Mach 1 MV2350 Condor. I don't know any info about the boat or the company. Do you have any info on the Mach 1 boats or where I can get some info?
|
You will not find a lot of information about Mach 1's of that vintage. There are still quite a few Mach 1 boats around, and some owners add information and will fill in bits and pieces.
From what I understand, the company was originally Glastec Industries, based in IL. From what I have read Glastec was one of the first boat builders to use fiberglass construction. Glastec was a respected builder. When the original owner decided to retire, the company was sold to Freedom Boats. Freedom Boats targeted the Mach 1 as a price point or entry level boat. The company and tooling was moved to Florida. Freedom Boats built the Mach 1 that I have which is a 1990 model. The first two letters in the hull id number are the state the boat was built in. Somewhere around 1994 Freedom Boats went bankrupt and closed down. Baha boats (not Baja) in New Mexico bought the tooling and the rights to the name Mach 1, and built the boats as a preorder boat, each one on a custom basis. Under Baha, the quality of the Mach 1 was improved. Baha Boats is currently for sale. As for the boats, they were entry level, but not poorly built. The hulls are hand laid fiberglass, and are very rugged. The boats are old school design, and have lots of plywood in the floor, seats, and interior. Not exactly poor construction, but not up to current standards either. Many boats built in the 80's had plywood floors. That is just how they were built. If left out in the weather they are prone to water damage and rot. Most of the ones that are still in service are still intact because they have been stored inside out of the weather. They perform well, are nicely balanced, and have a hull that is of similiar design to a Wellcraft or a ChrisCraft of the same era. Most owners or former owners will tell you that you can beat them up pretty badly, and they will keep going anyway. If you do searches of boats for sale, you will find many variations of Mach 1 boats. It seems that they were built in just about every configuration. Post some pictures of yours. |

He must have had a 454 Mag or 502 Mag since he was running in the mid 60's. I pulled up along side him, yes he was porpoising like mad, we waved to each other, then I pulled away. My old Condor is on the IL Fox Chain. I saw pictures of it last year. It was a 1991 MV 2350 Condor 7.4L B1. The Condor on the IL River. http://i1166.photobucket.com/albums/...ski/Condor.jpg |
does anybody know the difference between condor and magnum?
|
The Condor was the model MV2350. Magnum was the MV2450.
Condor was old school with a bolt on teak swim platform. Magnum was the new style with a molded in one. I believe the Magnum was a bit larger than the Condor even not counting it's swim platform. I saw one at the dealer but never on the water so it was hard to gauge it's size. |
