Joe,

If you decide to stay with the 496, see if you can find/buy just the long-block. You can swap over all the accessories... it's much cheaper!

There is a calculation for sizing the heat exchanger to dissapate the btus generated by the engine coolant. Do you know how to derive the btus your engine is making?

I built a custom closed cooling and went big on the exchanger because I did not know how to come up with the btus. It works fine but I might have been able to save weight and $$ if I could have used a smaller exchanger.

I have no clue on how to determine the BTU's created by an engine. Heck I would just use the 525EFI heat exchanger size and make educated guesses from there.

Well, that is what I did. It does work well but is heavy and expensive.

Joe: Doing this will reduce the life of your new engine(s). And it will reduce your resale if you decide to sell the craft. It's really a bad deal to put salt in the engine cooling cavities which just corrode, reduce flow, thin your walls and ....argghhh.

i have heard there is very little meat in BBC heads between valve guides and cooling passage. and will rot through very quickly running salt through them.

If you want to do this which I would not. Volvo had a raw water cooled 496 I have some of the parts.
