Whipple Side Mount Supercharger Information
Does anyone have a copies available of the Installation or Parts Manual for the Whipple Side Mount Supercharger system for the Merc 454 / 502 MPIs? I called Whipple today and they had no interest in providing any information on models they no longer sell. The person I talked with said the info might be on one of their old computers... :bsflag: They also stated that they had no parts available for these units. Does anyone know of another source for parts for these units or are they obsolete?
Thanks. |
what exactly do you need.

They are made by lysom. There was a guy on here or one of the sites that had a kit fore sale and he had the manual. I asked him for a copy and he wanted $20 + shipping. I sold the unit so I never got a copy.

Dustin Whipple is on here as Whipple Charged, send him a PM, and see if he can send you what you need.

I recently worked on one in a Baja. The customer had the complete manuel for it. I will see if I can get a copy from him and send it to you. What is it that you need or have a problem with? Or do you just want the manuel? I'll see what I can do.

Do a search here or over at performance boats , a guy named vegashallett or scarabrick did an install, spent a lot of time dialing it in only to remove it and go back to single carb setup ...

JasonSmith has them on his 29 outlaw. PM him, he might be able to tell you some things about them.

i will try and make a copy for you i had 2 copies from the start i will try to find one of them. i did send mine to whipple and they put their complete rotor pack (their description) in my housing which replaced all internal parts and had to send the front billett plate with the charger at the same time to have some machining done on it as well to make it all fit. All i know about the failure was the rotors started rubbing against each other and the engine started loosing power and i let off and shut it down i never could get whipple to call me back and tell me what happend. i did send my other unit in the fall of the same year. to keep it from failing .
whipple said the new rotor pack was" better in every way " than the old unit. i have been using the piggyback computer however it is being removed as we speak and will be going to mefi 3 system with my rebuilds. |

OK, here is the deal. I have a twin engine boat and one whipple side mount set up which I have never installed. There is no history on this set up so I would like to disassemble and inspect it prior to use. Also, I would like to understand the operation of the piggypack PCM before I install it or go to further expense of updating to a MEFI 3 and a reprogram. The piggyback PCM appears to be somewhat sophisticated as there is an O2 sensor attached (so I feel there is value in investigating it's operation). I am currently shopping for a second unit but am starting to wounder if I am wasting my money if there are no service parts available for them. Can anyone identify a common weakness of these (although I do not believe there is much to them... housing, rotors, bearings and gears)? So the bottom line is I am looking for a manual and the availability of service parts for the side mount set up. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks.
The best bet would be to go to a Mefi 3 or 4. If the piggyback ecm evers go out, you can't replace it. It's job is to turn on the extra 2 injectors above the blower. The egt probe is there for protection in case the egt's get over 1500 deg. It all works pretty good. The blower can be rebuilt if anything goes wrong with it and they do have better parts for it now. The ecm can't be fixed or replaced. You will be just fine to put it on like it is. However, it would be better to replace it with a Mefi 3 or 4. Good luck with it. Eddie |

sidemount manual
I have a copy of the manual stored on my computer. Anyone wanting a copy can pm me their e-mail address and i would be happy to send it. I have both the 454/502 mag and the manual for the HP500
I also have a 454/502 mag whipple setup that I am considering selling as I don't have enough room on the front of my engine to install it. I have an extra manifold, bigger injectors, MEFI 4B ECU, wiring harness and more. Serpentine belt crank pulley. |

Does anyone have a copy of this I can get?
|
I have the manual in PDF that I could email. The only problem we might have is it's a 17mbt file and some email providers won't allow that size. PM me your email addy and i can try sending it over. If that doesn't work I can ftp the file with Files2U FTP service.

I got it from Whipple today. Thanks for the offer. Whipple also told me they do not program MEFI 1 or 2 any longer, does anyone?

Www.mefituning.com will tune your 1 or 2.

I have a 99 OL 502 w/whipple side mount, still has the piggy back computer and secondary fuel pump. Everything is stock other than 8:1 pistons and MLS head gaskets. I blew a head gasket last summer, pulled engine and rebuilt her this winter. As of now the injectors aren't pulsing, wont start. Engine check light is on, whipple check light is showing code 15 (I think). I have went over grounds and all connections, everything is good to go. I am thinking of buying a Mercrusier scanner or PC software to read/delete the codes, and run an injector test. I need the tool anyways.
Will the scanner allow me to read/delete the code on the piggy back computer? Is this the next step, or am I just missing a simple ground or a bad connection? Or should I ditch the piggyback computer and 2 injectors pre-SC, and get my MEFI 3 re-tuned and go with bigger injectors? Any help would be appreciated and if anyone has a pdf of the instruction booklet, that would be awesome! I bought the boat 5yrs ago, 1 owner w/160hrs on it, SC was installed @25hrs. It now has 250hrs on it, I replaced the SC 2 summers ago. The boat always ran great, GPS 74mph. I know my way around an engine, but this is the first SC and MPI I have ever rebuilt. I'm not trying to push things to the limit, just want what I had, 74 is good for me. Thanks, |
