The Raylar HO replacement camshaft and our in house ECM reprogram will raise the horsepower to about 460HP with everything else stock. Let us know if we can help. Best Regards, Ray @ Raylar Do you have a different ECM program since I did the upgrade two years ago. I though it was 430HP? |
Ray, would this work for 2006 Volvo 8.1Gi (375hp) as well to upgrade to Gxi (420hp)? I have twins with duoprop drives with thru prop exhausts.
Do you reprogram volvo units as well? Also what about the cams? Would I need to have the throttle body drilled or is the cam and ecu upgrade all that needs to be done? What costs for parts? Thanks!

raylar are your cams the stock 496 ho cams and your programming gets you up to 460 hp? i have the stock 496 ho cams installed and bought new 496 ho ecm's for the upgrade. can the ecm's be re-programmed to get me the 460hp?
|
If I remember correctly the Raylar cam is a litle more aggressive than the Merc HO cam. I think the Whipple recal Stage 2 will get you a little more but Whipple says 92 octane.
Are you still using Whipple Ray or are you doing them in house now? |
Our new billet camshafts for this conversion are priced at $476 each plus UPS. You should also upgrade your valve springs, retainers, locks etc., if you are going to stay with your iron heads. Factory springs with moderate hours are borderline. The Raylar iron head valve spring kit is $293 with new springs, cnc retainers and locks, rotater eliminators and seals.
Our Raylar stock 496 upgrade cams are a different and much better profile than the stock GM HO cam. You can do this conversion to a Volvo Gi engine however we do not reprogram the newer 2006 and up I believe Volvo ECM (E-controls type -One big connector). This must be done for this type of conversion to work! Older Volvo engines used the mefi4b and Mark @ Precison Marine has a reporgram for those. I gave the ECM reprogram price earlier in this post. Cams and spring kits are in stock, ECM takes 2-3 days after we receive. Best Regards, Ray @ Raylar |
Raylar, is there an octane requirement for your 460HP upgrade?

If the camshaft in the new long block is the 425HO version , you're good to go on the engine. You can send us the ECM and we reprogram them to HO spec for $675 each. Let us know if we can help.

Why is it so expensive to reprogram?
I work at a dealership and install and program, pcm, bcm, ecm and the most we can charge is a hour labor and thats with a test drive. Is the calibration you guys use a one time program ?or can you reuse the same calibration over and over like we do in the automotive industry? |
Why is it so expensive to reprogram these ECM's, because we have to spend between $25K and $50K building the software and programs to reprogram a special ECM where no reprogramming software is available from the original ECM manufacturer. It takes a lot of reprograms and time to recoup our investment, believe me!
Can we reprogram a 2006 Volvo ECM, not yet, were spending money now and soon we should be able to, its different ECM from the old MEFI4's that Volvo was using prior to 2006. No octane upgrade requirement for any of Raylars 525HP thru 625HP 496 engine upgrades unless were building something with higher than 10.0 to 1 compression. 87 or 89 octane is just fine.
