I am replacing the heads in one of my 454 motors this weekend and was wondering if anyone can tell me where to go to get the specs on what to torque eveything down to.

The heads should go 80lbs.

Do you have new head bolts????? I would probably use new bolts. Torque specs can vary depending on the bolt and lube used on the bolts.

80lbs is most likely fine though. Torque them down in 20# increments and in the torque the bolts in the proper sequence.

When they are all torqued to 80#, loosen each bolt one at a time in the proper sequence and then retorque that bolt to 80#. You also have to use a sealant on any bolts that go into a water jacket.

If the heads are cast iron, the above is right, use 30wt oil on the underside of the head of the bolt and threads, all the same. If you have to use sealant on the threads, use aviation sealer and use it on all the bolts whether they go into a jacket or not.

All 3/8-16 bolts that go into cast iron (like intake/exhaust/fuel pump) are 35 ft-lbs. If the head is alum. take 10 ft-lbs off both the above torque values.

He has stock iron rect port heads.

I've used the ARP thread sealer and Permatex high temp thread sealer with no issues.

the spec in the H/P book says 75 long bolts 65 short

Torque specs really depend on which bolts are being used and what lube is being used. I think with ARP bolts and lube, they spec the torque numbers even lower, around 60#.

What Head gasket do you all suggest going with for iron 188 heads?

I have always used Felpro Marine head gaskets.
