Is there a mechanical gauge that can be mounted on top of tanks?I guess similar to an outboard tank but with a proper dial gauge.

Yes, Do a search for moeller marine mechanical gauge on eBay. I run these in my aluminum tanks. I did it to free up dash space for other gauges. They work well and bolt in to the hole for the original sender.
