Is there a way to tell which gears i have? i have read the 223's will get about 60, that's what i am working towards. Also would like to upgrade heads and cam over the winter. If my motor is tired then i would need to re fresh. If not i can get away cheaper. Dont plan on keeping the boat to to much longer.
You need to try a 17" prop. A 21" will only cause the rpms to be even lower.

ok. i was just wondering if it had something to do with the style of the prop. It does not look like any of my friends props.19 pitch props between models and manufactures do not change anything? Also no way to tell the gears in the outdrive?

i cant find picture of my prop or read anywhere on it anything other then 19p.

It is very sharp and flat back on all the fins. And the fins come to a point. not rounded liek most i see. Looks just like a cleaver type prop. except with splines. Idk. Maybe its an out board prop or something?

Sounds like a very old prop and probably not the right style for your boat.

It Should be a 1.50:1 ratio, you could remove the drive, and spin the input shaft, and count the turns of the propshaft to confirm(or remove plugs and turn the motor over manually).

I would honestly see if you can borrow or buy cheaply a 17 pitch mirage plus, that would be a good prop for speed, and the pluses act like a pitch or 2 up, so it would feel more like an 18 or 19.

sounds like you are going to find out what it was, something must have been going on...Sounds like a head gasket if two cylinders together have lost compression...

Lugging the engine at too low of a WOT rpm with too much prop could have caused it to detonate.
