Default F3LS's Problems...Two out of Three ain't bad!

Well....As I stated before I had three problems and posted them in three posts. Problem One was a ticking that was noticed at initial startup. It went away and once in the water after 1 hour total on motor I felt the motor bog slightly and start tapping LOUD! Second problem was 80 pounds of oil pressure from my Melling HV oil pump. Third was the engine suddenly (AFTER the initial water trial)Died going into reverse. NOT forward just reverse.

Well First I took the valve covers off and the rocker arms were BLACK and so were the top of the pushrods. Also the #3 intake rocker was very loose. I was running a remote oil kit and found out the oil lines were backwards for the last 45minutes of run time(Builders mistake!)I assume them being backwards clogged the filter and caused my lack of oil to the rockers and pushrods. The bottom of the rods were fine so were the lifters. Well I ditched the remote and put new lifters, rods and arms on.

Second I hooked up a "wet" gauge directly to the block to check my oil pressure.

I started her up and bingo NO tapping and oil pressure was right at 65 pounds cold and after fifteen minutes went to 60 pounds....Oil was flowing freely to the rockers and top end.
BUT.....I put in gear on the trailer out of the water and forward went great. Reverse well it died
every time. Why it was fine on my initial trip and suddenly went south is a big question. But I think it probally rules out the carb though. The plugs looked great which was a relief....Thanks for putting up with my long post. Any ideas on the reverse shift problem?

Told you it was something else Glad to hear you got it fixed. Hope there was no bottom end damage. What type of drive do you run??

What type of wet guage guage did you use? My high volume oil pump runs a normal pressure but the pressure will fall after bringing the throttle back and then bounce back. I think that the sender unit is not making a good ground. It seems to be more of an electrical thing.

I would like to get a mechanical guage to make sure.

Thanks

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. If the shift interrupt linkage is binding when it goes into reverse it will stall the engine. In order to check it the boat has to be in the water so the gears have some pressure against them. The interrupter should move and then snap back into the center position when the gears engage-if it doesn't snap back the engine will stall.

Definetly the shift interupter. If the cable gets old and a bit carroded, the spring in the cable can't pull the switch fast enough to keep the engine from dying. I have a memo about adjusting a new one if you have to install.
