Motor Squeal

I have 6.2's and my port engine seems to be squealing a bit...

What are the likely culprits? Belt, bearings...

We just changed the water impellar on that engine...I am thinking the belt wasnt set to tension tight enough. Wasnt making the noise before the install...Any suggestions.

I would say belt if it wasnt doing it before make sure pully didnt tear it up

JeremyAnderson 09-07-2010 07:51 PM

I have the same problem. I put the factory belt on and it began to squeal. Then I changed the belt to a new one, it began to squeal on my second outing. I have changed to a Gates belt and all is good now, but we'll see how it goes in a week or two.......

Gates is all i run

Take a hose and put it up to your ear, run the hose around and try to pin point the squeel. Go from there.

nice tip...ill be evaluating the motor in question today. ill let everyone know the outcome.

we tightened the belt...stilll squealing.

we are gonna replace the belt and see if that helps...the belt looks a bit worn.

if a new belt doesnt work, whats next?

Airpacker 09-09-2010 07:23 AM

possibly the seal on the recirc pump.

Or as simple as the belt was worn a little and went back on turning the opposite direction.

capt2130 09-09-2010 06:41 PM

Check the idler pulleys. Mine has a lite squeal. I am holding out to change them over the winter.

1MOSES1 09-09-2010 06:51 PM

im going to try a little belt grease...if it doesnt go away i may try a new belt.

if i cant fix it by the weekend, do you think its safe to run...

ill check the tensioner too..

JeremyAnderson 09-09-2010 08:01 PM

just get a new Gates belt from the auto parts store. Its the best $33 you'll spend. I put up with the squeal for several weekends, it puts un-needed stress in the boating experiance.

1MOSES1 09-10-2010 05:16 AM

What do I ask for when I go to the auto parts store? A gates belt but for what motor?

innerrage 09-10-2010 05:27 AM

moses just tell them year make and model number of engine etc say 2003 mecury 6.2 efi small block or take the belt off and they will match it up napa warehouse in cromwell should have it

1MOSES1 09-10-2010 06:39 AM

thanks...

i will let everyone know the outcome tonight...

Airpacker 09-10-2010 07:27 AM

just take the belt with you. They will have a device to measure it.

hahaha...nice

i think i have eliminated the belt as the source...i think its the bushing in the tensioner...def coming from the right side of the port engine.

That's where my squeal is coming from. Not sure if I can just change out the bearings or if the entire pulley has to be replace. Guess I'll find out when I tear into it.

I just checked and the tensioner pulley has a bearing not a bushing...If you have the same motor as me (6.2L) the pully is $24 with bearing. Almost not worth monkeying around with. Just replace the whole thing.

I have another question: is the tensioner pulley the same on a 350 as it is on a 6.2L? My dad ordered an extra one for his 350. I ll just use his if its the same.

I have 496ho`s. Ya I kind of figured it wouldnt be worth the aggrevation of just replacing the bearing? It'll be a winter project anyways.
