Your both on the mark. Here's the short list:
1) Oil bypass valve change - GM part # available.
2) Oil pan change - marine BBC oil pan of your choice.
3) Large oil cooler is a must.
4) Merc BBC marine distributor or if you use the MSD distributor supplied with the ZZ502, then a rev limiter must be added.
5) Rocker arm change - roller rocker arms of your choice.
6) Stock cam is fine but exhaust manifold and tailpipe design and length may be a factor as also your care in use.
7) Carb needs change or mod - Install a Holley 950cfm 4150HP carb or at minimum change the vacuum secondaries to mechanical. (trust me on this one - the 950 is the carb to use)
Also, the ZZ502 crate motor block already has brass freeze plugs.

a friend bought that 502 and ran it for 2yrs with stock exhaust then bought my mod heads put the teague stage two cam in it, I think its the same as crane 731 or close just over 600 lift andput my old dart that matched my heads a reworked nickerson 850 carb cmi etop headers trs drive boat does 76 all day with old beat up mirage 25 prop. so never changed his stock mer cooler or oil pan hell he only flushes it out at the end of the season and its been running for 6 yrs or more
. so you should be fine but a set of headers will give you more power.stainless marine last forever it seams, my bud did have a small leak on the cmis on the outside weld by the collector. good luck

Nope. The factory BBC oil pan is a 6 quart. Yes, the capacity does mean something, but the baffle and deflector MUST be designed for marine use. I have seen both and the marine pan is very different.

if you want I can call my friend monday and ask what changes he did besides my dart intake and carb and so on. if he changed the oil pan, and anything else I missed. also ask how many hours he ran it stock before changing the heads ,intake , carb. I think he is using the stock marine wiring harness and merc stuff no msd. for a trs boat it flies it mat hit high 70s or 80 with the right prop. later art
